Steve has taught in post secondary education settings since 1997. His chief academic research interest is on "the impact of training people in human rights." He has trained & counselled with diverse populations, including military peacekeepers, human rights activists, college & university students, and people from a wide array of different cultural backgrounds.
Steve worked in refugee aid for the United Nations in Africa for several years. He also worked as an inner city school social worker in Canada.
Steve is bilingual (English / French); he is also familiar with Italian, Spanish, and other languages. He is a certified teacher, and a registered social worker.
Steve is a recipient of "YMCA International Peace Medallion," and a recipient of the College "Board of Governors Professional Development Award" at the college where he teaches. He was awarded the "most inspiring alumnus" designation by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education - University of Toronto - during the Institute's centennial celebration.
Steve is a former Vice President of the Ontario Association of Social Workers He has been a dedicated member of the social work profession since 1981.
Steve is an experienced group facilitator. As a trained and registered social worker with over 30 years’ experience, Steve knows how to be sensitive to the needs of groupings of people. He can deal with diversity, deploy different leadership styles, and encourage every individual to get involved and to feel like they belong.
Steve is a Certified Teacher in the province of Ontario, and a holder of a Bachelor of Education degree. He has taught post secondary courses in conflict resolution & negotiation, cross cultural sensitivity, entrepreneurship, human rights, human resource management, human behaviour in the workplace, psychology, refugee issues, social welfare, social work, and sociology. He teaches in both English and in French. Feedback which he receives from students in the past have included comments such as “excellent planning, course is well laid out, delivers what he says he will, knows his stuff, and is approachable and open with all students.”
Steve has lectured in post-secondary courses, both college & university level, since 1997. He specializes in courses in social welfare, social work, and human rights. Steve is experienced in the use of multimedia and knowledgeable about constructing a participatory atmosphere. Feedback from students has included such remarks as: “funny, entertaining, informative, never dull.” He has been praised for his ability to involve students in the classroom, and create an atmosphere of dialogue.
Steve is a registered social worker with over 30 years’ experience in professional counselling. He specializes in marriage counselling, cross cultural situations, and parent / adolescent conflict. Steve is eclectic in his philosophy about counselling but is especially fond of the “Solution Focussed Brief Therapy” approach, which places emphasis on a positive, future oriented, solution-based vision of the problem.
As trained social worker and marriage counsellor, Steve has experience with teaching conflict resolution skills. Having worked overseas in refugee situations for the United Nations in Africa, he has first hand experience of conflict resolution work under difficult conditions in the field. Steve has taught courses in conflict resolution / negotiation skills to college students and to military peacekeepers.
Steve has organized and led staff retreats for organizations undergoing a period of change. Agendas for these events have included conflict resolution, planning for the future, trouble shooting, strategic direction, and facilitation of staff communication.
